A head-and-shoulders portrait of Leland Harrison, turned to his left, dated September 8, 1929, shows a man who would spend much of his career in the U.S. diplomatic service. Harrison, born in 1893 and dead by 1951, joined the Foreign Service and rose through its ranks during the years between the world wars.
