Turned to the left and shown from the head and shoulders, this William Howard Taft portrait has the plain, direct look typical of photographs made for wide circulation around 1908. Taft was then Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt and the Republican nominee for president, so his public image drew real interest from newspapers and voters. Portraits like this one were a common way for Americans to follow national figures in those years. Taft won the election that November and later served as Chief Justice of the United States, making him the only person to hold both the presidency and that office.
