W. H. Auden, the poet born in 1907 and died in 1973, is shown here in a head-and-shoulders portrait turned to the right, a pose that keeps his profile and famously rumpled features in clear view. The photograph dates to around 1970, a period when Auden was well established as one of the most important English-language poets of the twentieth century, having moved to the United States in 1939 and later spent part of each year in Oxford and part in New York. Portraits from this era often aimed to capture a writer's face as much as his work, and this one invites a close look at the expression of a man whose poems ranged from political verse to devotional lyrics.
