A head-and-shoulders engraving of Major General Carter Littlepage Stevenson, shown in profile facing right, this print was published in 1887 as an illustration in volume 3 of *Battles and Leaders of the Civil War*, on page 484. That series, drawn from *The Century* magazine, gathered firsthand accounts and portraits from both Union and Confederate veterans in the years after the war. Stevenson, a Virginia-born Confederate officer who died in 1888, commanded a division during the defense of Vicksburg in 1863. Portraits like this one were prized in the period as a way to put a face to the names in battle narratives.
