Novelist Sinclair Lewis is shown in this head-and-shoulders portrait, turned to the right, from a period between 1900 and 1940, the years when he moved from a small-town Minnesota upbringing to national fame. Lewis satirized American middle-class complacency in novels such as *Main Street* (1920) and *Babbitt* (1922), and in 1930 he became the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Portraits of writers from this era were often made for magazines, book jackets and publicity, so images like this one helped shape how the public pictured the author of such pointed social criticism.
