Richard Wagner, the German composer of music dramas such as "Tristan und Isolde" and the Ring cycle, sits here in a head-and-shoulders study with his face turned to the right and a beret on his head. The record gives no date, but the halftone process places the print in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, when photomechanical reproduction let portraits of famous musicians circulate widely in newspapers, magazines and books. Wagner had died in 1883, so images like this one kept his likeness in public view and fed the enormous interest in his work and his controversial persona.
