Jeffrey Amherst, later Baron Amherst, was a British army officer whose campaigns in North America helped drive France out of Canada during the Seven Years' War. This engraved head-and-shoulders portrait shows him facing right, a format typical of printed likenesses of prominent military men that circulated widely in the eighteenth century. The caption card records no date, so the print's exact year of publication is unknown, but its subject's career places it in the decades around the war. Amherst later served as commander in chief of British forces in North America, a post that gave his name a lasting place in the history of the period.
