Mariano Paredes y Arrillaga, a Mexican army officer who seized power in 1846 and served as president during the early months of the war with the United States, appears here in profile, turned to the right. The woodcut is dated 1848, the year the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended that conflict and Mexico ceded roughly half its national territory. Portraits of military and political leaders from this period were often produced quickly for newspapers and popular sale, so the image reflects how Paredes was presented to a public following the war's events.
