William Pitt, the Elder, who became Earl of Chatham in 1766, is the sitter here, shown in a head-and-shoulders engraving turned to the right. Pitt was the dominant British statesman of the Seven Years' War, a fiery orator in the House of Commons who directed the war effort that won Canada and much of India for Britain. Portraits like this one were widely reproduced in the eighteenth century, so they circulated as a way for readers to recognize a public figure whose speeches and policies filled the newspapers. The record gives no date, so the plate's exact year is unknown.
