Anita Newcomb McGee, a physician and public health advocate, is shown here in a head-and-shoulders portrait turned to the right. She was a leading figure in the effort to bring trained women into the U.S. military medical service, and she helped establish the Army Nurse Corps in 1901. The portrait was made by the Washington, D.C., studio of photographer Benjamin Clinedinst around 1904, a period when Washington was a center for federal medical and scientific work. The record's date and attribution come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified, but the portrait remains a useful view of a woman who helped shape the modern military nursing profession.
