Few American political writers were as closely tied to the pen as John Dickinson, whose *Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania* (1767–1768) helped rally colonists against the Townshend duties. This 1951 photograph reproduces an oil portrait of him painted in 1780 by Charles Willson Peale, which hangs in Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Dickinson's refusal to sign the Declaration of Independence made him a divisive figure, and the restrained head-and-shoulders composition suits a man remembered more for his arguments than his showmanship.
