Taken on June 3, 1860, this head-and-shoulders portrait shows Abraham Lincoln shortly after the Republican National Convention in Chicago nominated him for president that May. The print itself is a later reproduction, made around 1894 from the original sitting, and it was copyrighted in 1898. Its plain background and steady, slightly turned pose reflect the restrained style that made photographs like this one useful for campaign engravings and printed portraits during the 1860 election.
