Long regarded as the last photograph taken of Abraham Lincoln from life, this head-and-shoulders portrait was made by Alexander Gardner at his Washington gallery, and the crack across the image comes from the original negative, which was broken and discarded in 1865. For decades it was dated to April 10, 1865, just days before Lincoln's assassination, but later research points to a sitting on Sunday, February 5, 1865. This is a copy of that picture, reproduced in Frederick Hill Meserve's 1911 collection and later in Lloyd Ostendorf's album of Lincoln photographs. The surviving original print is held by the National Portrait Gallery.
