This half plate daguerreotype shows Cornelius Vanderbilt in a head-and-shoulders pose, turned slightly to the left, with his side whiskers clearly visible. Vanderbilt, born in 1794, built his fortune first on steamboats in New York waters, earning the title Commodore, before moving into railroads. The plate was made in the studio of Mathew Brady, and the gold toning on its silver surface gives the image its warm, subdued color. Numbers scratched into the face and back of the plate are part of its documented history.
