John C. Calhoun, the South Carolina statesman, appears here in a bust-length engraving shown in profile, turned to the right, a format that engravers favored for printed likenesses of public men in the nineteenth century. Calhoun served as a U.S. representative and senator, as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, and as secretary of state under John Tyler, and he became one of the most forceful advocates of states' rights and slavery's defense before his death in 1850. The record does not give a date or engraver for this particular print, so its exact origin is uncertain, but its profile pose is typical of the portraits circulated during his long public career.
