Shown in a bust portrait turned toward the right, Joseph William Martin Jr. appears in a photograph dated around 1940, several years into his long service in the U.S. House of Representatives. A Republican from Massachusetts, Martin was first elected to Congress in 1924 and became a leading voice for his party in the House, serving as minority leader for much of the 1940s. He later served as Speaker of the House twice, from 1947 to 1949 and again from 1953 to 1955. The record says little about the setting or photographer, so the print's main value lies in documenting a figure central to mid-century party politics.
