James Barbour (1775-1842) was a Virginia lawyer and politician who served as governor of Virginia, U.S. senator, and later U.S. Secretary of War under John Quincy Adams, so this bust-length lithograph shows a figure whose career spanned the early republic's state and national politics. The print shows him in profile, facing right, a convention of portraiture that emphasized the sitter's outline and dignity. Lithography, developed in the 1790s and widely used by the 1820s and 1830s, allowed portraits like this one to circulate cheaply among readers and collectors. The caption card records no date, so the exact year of printing is uncertain.
