David Hume, the Scottish philosopher and historian, appears here in a bust-length profile facing right, rendered as an engraving whose maker and date the caption card does not record. Hume (1711-1776) was one of the central figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, known for his skeptical inquiries into causation, human understanding and religion, and for his multivolume History of England. Engraved likenesses like this one were widely circulated in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when printed portraits of writers and thinkers helped establish their public reputations. The profile format was a common convention of the period, lending the sitter a formal, dignified air.
