This bust portrait shows James Matlack Scovell, born in 1833, turned to face right. The caption card gives no date, so the sitting itself cannot be placed precisely, but the format of a head-and-shoulders photographic portrait points to the mid-to-late nineteenth century, when studio portraits of this kind became a common way for ordinary people to record their likenesses. Cropped close to the shoulders and set in profile, the pose was a standard convention of the period, and the sitter's expression and dress offer the clearest clues to when and where the picture was made.
