Shown in a bust-length profile turned to the left, this engraving presents Sir John Hawkins, the Elizabethan naval commander who died in 1595. Hawkins was a central figure in English maritime expansion, a pioneer of the transatlantic slave trade in the 1560s, and later Treasurer of the Navy, where he helped prepare the fleet for the Spanish Armada in 1588. The print was made between 1882 and 1883, so it is a later rendering of a sixteenth-century subject, and it is worth comparing with older likenesses to see how the image was reshaped for a Victorian audience.
