Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, is shown here in a bust-length portrait turned to the left, a pose that printmakers often used for formal likenesses of statesmen. The record gives no date for this impression, so it is best understood as one of the many prints made from portraits of Hamilton that circulated widely in the decades after his death in 1804. Such images helped shape how Americans remembered the man who built the nation's early financial system and helped found the Federalist Party. Looking closely at the profile can reveal how engravers and lithographers of the period translated a famous face into a repeatable public image.
