Sir Francis Drake, the Elizabethan sea captain, appears here in a half-length view turned to the left, a pose that engravers of his era often used to give a portrait a sense of purpose and movement. Drake (1540?-1596) led the second circumnavigation of the globe and harassed Spanish shipping, becoming one of the most celebrated figures of England's late sixteenth-century naval rise. This engraving was made in the early 1880s, long after his death, so it reflects how Victorian printmakers imagined the explorer rather than a likeness drawn from life. Its value lies in showing how later generations shaped Drake into a national hero.
