Lotta Crabtree, the stage performer, appears here in a half-length portrait taken around 1868, when she was a young and rising star of the American stage. She is shown facing left, leaning on a table and gazing downward, a relaxed pose that departs from the formal stiffness typical of studio portraits of the era. The photograph was copyrighted by J. Gurney & Son, the New York studio that produced many carte-de-visite and cabinet portraits of theatrical figures in the 1860s. Crabtree, born in 1847, built a long career as a singer, dancer and comedienne, and images like this helped audiences connect her face to the roles she performed.
