Rather than a camera portrait of the novelist, this is a photograph of a painted likeness of Carson McCullers, shown half-length and standing, turned toward the left. The record attributes the painting to Henry Varnum Poor, an American painter known for his modernist canvases and murals, and dates the picture to about 1946. That was the year her novel *The Member of the Wedding* appeared, a few years after *The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter* (1940) had made her one of the notable Southern writers of her generation. The catalog data is marked as unverified, so the painting's origin and date should be checked against other sources.
