George Gershwin appears here in a half-length portrait, shown standing and turned to the left, a pose that suits a composer who spent much of his public life at the piano or in front of an audience. The print comes from the Bain News Service, the Manhattan photo agency whose glass negatives and caption cards now form the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Gershwin, who moved from Tin Pan Alley songwriting to concert works such as Rhapsody in Blue and the opera Porgy and Bess, was a frequent subject for New York press photographers in the 1920s and 1930s. The card records no date, so the sitting is best placed within his active career rather than pinned to a specific year.
