James Weldon Johnson, the writer, lyricist and civil rights leader, is shown here in a half-length view turned to the left, a pose typical of formal studio portraits from the early twentieth century. Johnson (1871-1938) was a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance, co-wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing," and served as executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People from 1920 to 1930. This print comes from the NAACP's own records, so it likely circulated as publicity or organizational material during the years he led the group.
