Samuel F. B. Morse is shown here at half length, resting his left hand on a telegraph apparatus, a detail that ties the portrait directly to the invention that made him famous. He faces slightly to the left, and the sitter's pose suggests a man proud of his instrument rather than a studio figure posed for decoration. The verso is inscribed "From Brady negative," pointing to the Mathew Brady studio, which produced many of the most widely circulated portraits of nineteenth-century Americans. Morse, who had championed the electric telegraph since the 1840s, sat for several such images, and this one reflects the period's interest in linking a notable person with the tools of modern communication.
