Robert Morris, the Philadelphia merchant shown here in a seated, half-length view facing left, is remembered as the financier of much of the Continental Army's supplies. He served as superintendent of finance under the Articles of Confederation from 1781 to 1784, when his personal credit helped keep the war effort and the young government running. Because the caption card records no date for this engraving, it is best read as a likeness of a man whose reputation rested on that wartime finance and on his signature of the Declaration of Independence.
