Winfield Scott Hancock appears in this half-length portrait, seated and turned toward the left, a pose that keeps the focus on his face. Hancock was a Union major general whose II Corps held the center of the line at Gettysburg in July 1863, and he was wounded there on the third day of the battle. He later ran for president as the Democratic nominee in 1880 and lost to James A. Garfield. The caption card gives no date for the picture, so it is best read as a portrait of the officer in general rather than a record of a specific sitting.
