Booth appears here at half length, turned to the left and holding a cane, a pose common in the small carte de visite portraits of the early 1860s. The number 4564 and the name "Wilkes Booth" are penned on the mount below the image, and the record suggests this may be an enlarged copy made in the later 1800s from one of those smaller cards. Booth, a well-known stage actor, shot President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's theater in April 1865, and this likeness was soon reproduced on wanted posters during the manhunt that followed. Booth was killed in Virginia later that same month.
