This half-length portrait shows Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Lakota leader, seated and facing the camera with a calumet, the ceremonial pipe used in treaty-making and sacred occasions. The picture dates to about 1881, the year he surrendered to U.S. authorities after years in Canada following the Little Bighorn. The mount on the back names O.S. Goff of Bismarck, Dakota Territory, a photographer working on the northern plains at a time when the region was undergoing rapid change. The pipe he holds, rather than a military uniform or weapon, signals how he wished to be seen.
