Seated and facing the camera at half length, Champ Clark appears in this formal studio portrait from around 1915, when he was one of the most powerful men in Washington. The Missouri Democrat served as Speaker of the House from 1911 to 1919 and made an unsuccessful bid for the presidential nomination in 1912. The picture was taken by Fred Hartsook, whose studio operated in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and it was registered for copyright, which is why the print carries a Copyright Office number. Hartsook's studio produced portraits of many public figures of the period.
