A seated, half-length portrait of a man in a fez, facing the camera, this albumen print is captioned in Ottoman Turkish on the back, though the Library's staff devised the title because the sitter is unidentified. The fez was the standard headwear of the Ottoman state after the reforms of the 1820s and 1830s, so its presence reflects the dress codes of the period. The photographer's name, Kargopoulo, is part of the title, which points to a studio working in the Ottoman capital. Albumen prints like this one were the main medium of commercial studio portraiture from about 1860 to 1900, and the verso caption is a useful clue for researchers tracing the sitter.
