Richard Wagner appears here in a half-length view, standing and conducting, shown in left profile, a pose that captures the physical energy he brought to the podium. The print is dated to about 1911, roughly three decades after Wagner's death in 1883, which places it in the years when his operas were being revived and debated across Europe and America. Wagner was both a composer and the author of his own librettos, and by the early twentieth century his stage works had become touchstones for audiences and critics alike. Images like this one helped circulate his likeness to a public that knew his music more often than his face.
