Pictured nearly in profile and facing left, this half-length portrait carries a name scratched into the face of the plate: Balie Peyton, a Tennessee politician who served in Congress. The image is a gold-toned half-plate daguerreotype, made between 1844 and 1860 in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose galleries photographed many public men in those years. Gold toning gave the silvery image a warmer cast and helped protect its delicate surface. Because each daguerreotype is a single unique object, the scratched inscription is an important clue to who sat for it.
