Few daguerreotypes in this group carry the sitter's own name in pencil on the back, and this whole-plate portrait of Charles Edwards Lester does. Lester (1815-1890) was an American writer known for popular biographies and travel books, and the plate was made in Mathew Brady's New York studio sometime between 1848 and 1860. The half-length pose, turned to the left, is typical of the studio's formal portraits of that decade. The plate's maker's hallmark and the notation on its reverse help date the object and identify the sitter.
