A nearly profile, half-length pose sets this half-plate daguerreotype apart, and the catalog identifies the sitter as Walter Restored Jones, who lived from 1793 to 1855, though alternate spellings and a Washington connection also appear in the notes. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1855, when gold toning was a common way to deepen the image and strengthen the silvered surface. Scratched numbers and a partly legible inscription on the back, including a 1920 notation mentioning the U.S. War College, show the plate passed through later hands before reaching the Library of Congress.
