Scratched into both the face and back of this half plate daguerreotype is the name Walter Jones, probably the Washington, D.C., man who lived from 1776 to 1861. The three-quarter length pose, turned to the left, is typical of studio portraits from the 1840s and 1850s. The plate was produced in Mathew Brady's studio, whose galleries drew many prominent public figures of the period. Because each daguerreotype is a unique image on a silvered copper plate, handwritten labels like these were often the only record of who sat for the camera.
