Scratched into the face of this plate is the inscription "Sen. Fitzpatrick," which identifies the sitter as Benjamin Fitzpatrick (1802–1869), an Alabama politician who served as governor and as a United States senator. The half-length portrait, taken slightly to the left, was produced in Mathew Brady's studio at a time when Brady was photographing many members of Congress and other public figures. Gold toning, used on many daguerreotypes of this era, strengthened the silver image and gave it a warmer tone. The plate reached the Library of Congress in 1920 by transfer from the U.S. War College.
