A politician's name is scratched into the back of this half-plate daguerreotype, which identifies the sitter as Thomas George Pratt, governor and later senator from Maryland. Pratt led the state from 1845 to 1848 and then served in the U.S. Senate, and the portrait was likely made at Mathew Brady's studio, where Washington officeholders often sat in the 1850s. As a daguerreotype, it is a single unique image on silvered copper, and the gold toning deepens its tones and protects the surface. Its transfer to the U.S. War College in 1920 explains how it later came into the Library of Congress.
