Joseph Vance, who served as governor of Ohio in the late 1840s, sits turned slightly to his left in this half-length daguerreotype. The plate was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose sittings drew many of the country's public figures during the 1840s and early 1850s. Gold toning, applied after development, warmed the silver image and helped protect its delicate surface. Handwritten scratches on the plate and its back, including the note "Gov. Vance, Ohio," suggest it was identified by hand, and it came to the Library of Congress by transfer from the U.S. War College in 1920.
