John McAllister, who lived from 1786 to 1877, sits in this half-length stereoscopic daguerreotype, turned slightly to the left. Made as one of a matched pair, the two offset images merge into a single three-dimensional figure when viewed through a stereoscope, a parlor entertainment that was widely popular in the 1850s. The reverse bears a label naming the sitter as J. McAllister, Jr., a reminder that family names could be easy to confuse across generations.
