The manuscript label on the cover glass reads "Mr. Hunt," identifying the sitter as Freeman Hunt (1804-1858), the New York publisher best known as editor of *Hunt's Merchants' Magazine*, a periodical devoted to commerce. The half-length pose, turned slightly to the left, comes from the Mathew Brady studio, which made portraits of many figures in business, politics and letters during the 1840s and 1850s. Gold toning and the trimmed edges are worth noticing, since both were common finishing steps that helped protect and brighten the silvered plate.
