A New York Whig, Washington Hunt, sits for this half-length portrait, which was taken in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1860. Hunt served as governor of New York from 1850 to 1852. The identification rests on an engraving by A.H. Ritchie made from a Brady daguerreotype, so the likeness has been checked against a published print. The gold toning and the French plate maker's hallmark stamped on the plate are worth a closer look. The plate reached the Library of Congress in 1920 by way of the U.S. War College.
