Few faces from the 1840s and 1850s look so directly out of a picture as this sitter's, who turns slightly to the right while keeping his eyes on the camera. The half-plate daguerreotype is gold toned, a treatment that deepened its tones and helped protect the delicate silvered surface. Scratched into the plate are the number 206 and the name Shepherd Knapp, a hand-marked label that may have been added during handling or cataloging. Produced at Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, the plate later passed to the U.S. War College and entered the Library of Congress in 1920.
