This half-length portrait of Israel T. Hatch shows him turned slightly to the right with his eyes fixed on the camera. The plate is a gold-toned half-plate daguerreotype, and a hand-scratched "189: Hatch" on its surface probably served as a studio or collection reference. Mathew Brady's studio produced it sometime between 1844 and 1860, when Brady's galleries drew many prominent sitters. Gold toning was a common way to add warmth and some protection to the mirror-like silver image, which is worth noticing when you view the plate at different angles.
