Matthew Vassar (1792-1868) was an English-born brewer who became a Poughkeepsie, New York, philanthropist, and this engraved bust portrait shows him in profile, facing right, with his features rendered in fine line work typical of nineteenth-century American portrait prints. Vassar's best-known legacy is Vassar College, which he founded in 1861 as one of the first institutions to offer women a full collegiate education on par with men's colleges. The caption card records no date for the engraving, so it likely dates from his later years, when his name was closely tied to that college and his public reputation was at its height.
