Blanche Scott is pictured here at the start of aviation's first decade, when a woman performing in public with an airplane was still rare. Her flying in 1910 made her one of the earliest American women to take to the air as a pilot, and she drew crowds at exhibition meets across the country. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs taken for the Bain News Service in New York. Those pictures show how newspapers presented early flight to the public, often with the pilots themselves as the main attraction.
