Booker T. Washington, the educator who founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama in 1881, sits for this portrait printed from a photograph taken around 1906, when he was among the most prominent Black Americans in the country. The image shows him at the height of his national influence, as an adviser to presidents and a leading voice on vocational education and economic self-reliance. Portraits of him from this period circulated widely in newspapers, books and pamphlets, and they are useful today for seeing how he chose to present himself to the public.
