Aristophanes, the Athenian playwright of the late fifth and early fourth centuries BCE, is shown here as a bust portrait in engraved form. The record gives no date for the plate, so it is hard to say when it was cut or which edition it may have served. Engravings of ancient writers like Aristophanes were usually made from later imagined likenesses, since no reliable portrait from his lifetime survives. What makes such images worth a closer look is how they show later ages reconstructing classical authors, often shaping them to suit the tastes of their own time.
